Ultrasound Q&A
-
What can I do to prepare for my Ultrasound?Hydration is key to obtaining the best images of the baby. You should increase your water intake 5 days prior to your Ultrasound to ensure proper hydration of the skin and adequate amniotic fluid. Planning the ultrasound session around the baby’s “awake” time is suggested but not necessary. Drinking some cold apple or orange juice right before your ultrasound session may help get the baby up and moving to ensure we can get the best angles and visualize all of the fun movements.

Why is there a preference of the amount of attendees for the sessions? While we understand that you should be allowed to have anyone you would like in your own home, there are a few reasons why we request the limit. With the 15-20 minute scans, there is just enough adequate time to focus on obtaining the perfect images for you and your family. The more people in a room, the more questions, and distractions. People are curious and want to focus on different things or see something that was already imaged which takes time from the experience and potential images that could have been captured. The Tech’s focus is to obtain the best possible images of the face - front and profile, hands and feet. Sometimes, if too much time is spent in one area, the perfect image could be missed from a simple movement that wasn't caught. The Peek-a-Boo Party allows more time to answer questions, show requested areas, and focus on satisfying each and every guest coming to see your baby. The 15-20 minute scans are more of a small intimate setting for the parents and close friends and family to enjoy while the Peek-a-Boo party is meant to be a fun and exciting experience for all!

Is this Ultrasound safe?Over the last 40 years of studies, no harm to mother or baby has been proven. Ultrasound uses sound waves to obtain an image, not radiation. 3D/4D/iLive uses the same technology using sound waves to produce the image but in several dimensions to obtain realistic views of the baby. Here at Peek-a-Boo To You!, only credentialed Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers operate the machine and are trained to follow the FDA recommendations of scan length and frequency of sound waves. We have also invested in the newest and safest portable ultrasound system with the latest technologies and software to ensure safety as well as quality.

Is this done in-home only?Peek-a-Boo To You! does not have a studio setup but we will go anywhere you desire. Whether it's in your home, a friend's home, a nursing home to show Grandma your baby, a place of business, a venue…. we will travel to and set up anywhere you like (within reason).
-
Will this Ultrasound take the place of an Ultrasound ordered by my Doctor?Absolutely not! This ultrasound is elective and should never be done in place of a diagnostic ultrasound ordered by your Doctor. Even though the Technologist performing your study is trained to perform diagnostic ultrasounds, this is just for fun and bonding! An anatomical survey or growth scan will not be performed. If any anomalies are suspected during your scan, your Doctor will be notified during their normally scheduled business hours and it will be at their discretion to notify you and/or order a diagnostic ultrasound. If an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, you will be instructed to go to the nearest emergency room and your Doctor will be contacted immediately.

Is there an extra charge for twins (or more)? Here at Peek-a-Boo To You! we believe the more the merrier! There is no additional charge for any number of babies however, the same session will take place which will just limit the amount of time given to each baby. The babies will be labeled however the expectant parents choose so the pictures will differentiate the baby being imaged.

What is 2D, 3D, 4D, iLive and Smart Face?2D Ultrasound is a flat, black and white image in 2 dimensions. This is what is used for diagnostic purposes during a routine fetal anatomy scan. 3D Ultrasound is a colored, life-like 3-dimensional image of the baby. Sound waves are distributed at multiple angles that produce a 3-dimensional image with depth. 4D Ultrasound is a movie created by multiple 3D frames put together over time. You are able to observe movements like yawning, waving, or playing Peek-a-Boo in real-time! ILive is the newest, most advanced technology that generates an amazingly realistic view of the fetus with human skin-like images. ILive uses a virtual lighting modality that is like a digital flashlight, highlighting the reflection to create a deeper and more refined image. (Please note- all images portray an orange-tan color and do not reflect the baby’s actual skin tone) Smart Face is a fast and intelligent optimization feature that removes occlusions in the volume data, eliminates unwanted noise information, and generates an optimal view of the fetal face with minimal effort to allow more time to focus on imaging. This technology can remove obstacles from the image that could block visualization of the fetal face, such as portions of the cord and placenta.

Will I get perfect pictures of the baby’s face?It is our number one goal here at Peek-a-Boo You! to obtain the best possible images of your baby, however, there are a number of factors that can limit the image quality. Maternal body type and size - we recommend that Mommys over 200 lbs to wait until 18 weeks for gender and 30 weeks for 3D/4D to ensure the baby is large enough to obtain the images needed at an increased depth. Fetal age and size - we recommend the baby to be at least 15 weeks in size before determining gender, the closer to 18 weeks though, the easier it is to view which improves accuracy. For the 3D/4D views of the fetal face, we recommend this between 25-35 weeks but it seems to be more obtainable around 27-32 weeks. The more fat the baby has, the more beautiful the 3D images. Fetal position - this is the most important factor! If the baby is facing your spine, the face can not be obtained. We will try tactics to have the baby shift from that position like walking, emptying the bladder, rolling on side, or drinking cold juice…. but sometimes we have stubborn babies who, despite every effort, will not move. We recommend you eat and drink a cold beverage right before your scan to ensure the baby is awake, so we can catch all the adorable movements. Placenta location - when the location of the placenta is anterior, which means it sits between your belly and the baby, we have to go through the placenta to obtain the images of the baby. This proves to be challenging if the fetal face or body part being imaged is close to the placenta and doesn’t allow enough fluid in the area. There is no way to move the placenta but with this Ultrasound system's Smart Face technology, it can help remove obstacles in front of the face to allow at least a portion of the face to be seen. Amount of fluid - we need adequate fluid to visualize the baby. If there is low fluid, this will make the images unclear. The more fluid the better, so drink up! We recommend you increase your fluid intake 5 days before your ultrasound to ensure your skin is hydrated and the fluid is abundant and clear. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer refunds for an uncooperative baby. We will do anything and everything to make the experience as amazing as possible even without those perfect profile/face images. Seeing the baby's heartbeat, hands and feet provide a memorable bonding experience with your baby even if the face is kept a secret until your next ultrasound or you hold him or her in your arms for the first time.

When is the best time to get a 2D, 3D, 4D Ultrasound?A 2D Ultrasound is optimal at any stage of pregnancy. We offer 2D scans as early as 8 weeks for an early peek at the baby up to full-term, 40+ weeks. The best time to get a 3D/4D ultrasound is between 25-35 weeks but can be attempted at any stage of pregnancy. Earlier ultrasounds allow whole-body images of the baby while later ultrasounds reveal improved facial features since the developing fat layer enhances these images.

How do I prepare my home for the session? We come to you with everything needed to make your experience perfect. We just need space in any room of choice to set up the portable bed and ultrasound machine, we will need a TV to hook up to if you are not just viewing on the ultrasound monitor and a parking space close to the home to unload/load the equipment. Please do not feel like you need to spot-clean your home! Peek-a-Boo To You! is a business owned by a Mother who knows how impossible it is to keep a house neat and tidy and how stressful it can be preparing to showcase the perfect home. Please don't stress or worry about anything other than the excitement of bonding with your baby. As long as we have enough room to set up the equipment, that’s all we care about! Also, please allow 1 hour for the setup, scan, and breakdown.
